12-Step Support
You are about to see why I care so much about the work I do.
Addiction is the driving force behind just about every poor choice and dissatisfied outcome for most of us these days. What exactly do I mean by this?
Well, if you have been trying to feel OK or even good or great by taking substances like alcohol, prescription medications, illegal drugs and ones that are legal in some states, then you probably already know what I am saying.
What about toxic relationships, compulsive sex & pornography, excessive shopping, over-eating, not eating, over-exercising? The list goes on and on….
The way I define addiction is the compulsive and obsessive need to try to fill a hole deep inside yourself with stuff and distractions.
Losing control over the rate and frequency of using the substance or behavior.
Trying to numb the tough feelings of pain and fear by masking them with a chemical blast that helps you for a moment forget how hard life feels.
Hitting the “easy button” to feel better and ultimately feeling worse.
You think that you need to leave reality to catch a breath only to find out that now you are under water.
The metaphors and analogies continue…
It is the serpent’s head who consumes incessantly and is never satisfied because it has no body.
It is the tiger who is so lovely to look at but is so fierce and deadly to play with.
The ignoble battle we fight alone and never win.
The best thing that can happen with addiction is that you hit a rock bottom hard enough that you will seek a better way to tackle your feelings.
You will see that your single-handed efforts did not work. You are right now willing to get the help you need.
Help is available and I am here to get you to a better place where you will know how and when to seek help and what exactly you need to do for yourself.
I am a healed veteran of this war and I delight in your willingness to come to therapy. You are so brave! It is an act of amazing grace and strength to say you are ready to try something new.
Congratulations!! And while I do not expect this to always be true, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO SUCK!!!
Your better days await you.
There really is an easier, softer way.
